Translation Services in Cambridge – Economic Profile

Cambridge is located in southwestern Ontario and is part of what is often referred to “Canada’s Technology Triangle”, together with the adjacent cities of Kitchener and Waterloo. This region has one of the highest concentrations of high-technology companies in Canada. Cambridge was formed fairly recently, in 1973, when the city of Galt merged with the towns of Hespeler and Preston.

Today Cambridge is one of the fastest growing and strongest economic areas in Canada. More than 6,500 businesses call Cambridge home, and the manufacturing sector is particularly well-represented here. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada has its Canadian headquarters here and its Cambridge assembly plant employs 4300 people. Other industrial manufacturers include ATS Automation Tooling systems, Com Dev International Ltd., Novocol Pharmaceuticals of Canada, Loblaw Companies East, E.D. Smith, Rockwell Automation, Frito-Lay Canada, Dana Corporation, and many others. Economic growth has been strong and non-residential construction grew by almost 60% between 2005 and 2006. These international manufacturers create a strong demand for multi-lingual services.

A satellite campus of Conestoga College is located in Cambridge as well as the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. The nearby cities of Waterloo and Kitchener offer extensive educational opportunities, including Wilfrid Laurier University, the University of Waterloo and Conestoga College.

The demographic composition of Cambridge includes people of English, Scottish, Irish, Portuguese, German, Armenian and Italian origins. A considerable number of Newfoundlanders have also migrated to Cambridge while the city also has a significant Franco-Ontarian population. In recent years, the city has also attracted immigrants from India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. This diverse ethnic mix may also provide an opportunity for ethnic marketing.
