The Hamilton metropolitan area with its close to 700,000 residents is the ninth largest in Canada. The city is part of the “Golden Horseshoe”, a densely populated and highly industrialized urban agglomeration centered around the west end of Lake Ontario.

More than half of the immigrants are of European origin, and the most prevalent groups are Irish, English, Scottish, Italian, German, French, Polish, Dutch, Ukrainian, Portuguese, Hungarian, and Yugoslavian.
