Peterborough has a population of about 122,000 residents in its metropolitan area and is located in central eastern Ontario, about 125km northeast of Toronto.
Peterborough’s economy is shaped by the operations of three major companies: General Electric, Quaker Oats, and Outboard Marine. These companies have had major impact on the growth of the city. Other important companies with operations in Peterborough include Siemens and Minute Maid.
Among the largest regional employers are the Peterborough Regional Health Centre, the school board and the local government. Peterborough features a vibrant cultural scene with countless theaters, museums, tourist attractions, historical sights, and festivals. The city’s rich Aboriginal heritage can be admired in the Canadian Canoe Museum, and the Peterborough Centennial Museum and Archives feature a comprehensive collection of artifacts. Every year the city is host to events such as the international Festival of Lights, the Peterborough Folk Festival, and the Artsweek.
Peterborough is home to two respected institutions of higher education: Trent University and Fleming College. While Trent University specializes in liberal arts and sciences, Fleming College is a multidisciplinary institution with several campuses throughout the city. Both institutions feature a diverse student community and have attracted many international students as well.
