Translation Services in Edmonton, Alberta – Economic Profile

The capital of the Province of Alberta, Edmonton, is the second largest city in the province after Calgary. It is a traditional hub of the oil and gas industry in northern and central Alberta. Edmonton has a much longer oil and gas industry history than Calgary, and was nicknamed “Oil Capital of Canada” way back in the 1940s.

Despite the steadily growing petroleum industry, Edmonton's economy is now the second most diverse in Canada. It was described as having the “best economic potential” of any North American city by the Financial Times publication, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) magazine. The survey also named Edmonton in the top-five large North American cities for business development and investment promotion.

Edmonton’s major economic sectors are finance, high-tech, biotech, and distribution and logistics. Edmonton is the home of Canadian Western Bank, and has other major financial centers including ATB Financial and Servus Credit Union. Large companies such as IBM, TELUS, Dell, Intuit Canada, BioWare, Matrikon, and General Electric have major offices in the city. Due to the increasing number of large international corporations that are entering into Edmonton, the demand for multi-lingual services and translations has steadily been increasing.

Edmonton has a very good reputation as one of Canada’s premiere research and education centers. It has also become one of Canada's major educational centres with more than 60,000 full time post-secondary students. The University of Alberta is the major university in the city with 35,000 students who attend more than 200 undergraduate programs and 170 graduate programs.

With a population of 1,034,945, Edmonton is the northernmost North American city with a metropolitan population over one million. According to the 2006 census, the five biggest minorities in Edmonton were Chinese 7.5%, Aboriginal 4.8%, South Asian 4.5%, Black 4.1%, and Filipino at 2.3%. The presence of different linguistic groups presents increasing opportunities for ethnic marketing.
